50 Days of Kenyan Kids Fashion- Day 23

September 6, 2016

Today was Xena’s first day in Kindergarten in uniform. This means that she is no longer in playgroup and has joined the big chaps in the pre-prep school, the ones all the younger kids look up to. Over the holidays, she tried so hard to be a big girl, faced with the fear that if she cried unnecessarily, or didn’t make her bed, or failed to finish her food, she just might not join pre-prep. It was therefore easy to get her to do the right thing by always pulling the pre-prep card when things were awry. On the way to school, she told me that she was excited to be joining the big kids class, though she didn’t need to as it was written all over her face and she could not sit still in the car.

“I am proud of you mama and I am proud of my dad”. She said as we approached her school. “Why do you say that?” I asked, ever so curious to hear what answer she would have this time round. “Because you go to work and pay my school fees and now I am now back to school.” Xena thinks I pay her school fees because once when she was begging me to stay at home and not go to work, I convinced her I had to, otherwise, I would not have the money to pay her school fees! And  I would love for it to remain that way! “What about papa, why are you proud of him?” I inquired further “Because he is my best friend.” She said, with a smile on her face.  It doesn’t take a genius to figure out who is the favorite parent!

Today was an emotional morning for me. Scratch that. Last week, when the dad took Xena uniform shopping and sent me a photo of her in one, I got teary. The thought that my baby, born not so long ago, who could not pronounce the “r” in rabbit and “flo” in flower and would replace both with “ya”, was now wearing school uniform. Next thing she will be moving to main school and before long, high school. Then she will fall in love with a mean 20-year-old caucasian guy with deep eyes that will see right through her soul, dense eyebrows, thick arms and a six-pack for days! I don’t think I will ever have the strength to handle all these developments.

I also know that very soon I will not have a say in what she wears and so I will enjoy dressing her up (now only over the weekends) as much as I can. I am not too worried about this progression though because I must say she is truly my daughter as she already has an enviable sense of fashion 🙂
